Which ecommerce platform is best for SEO?

The best ecommerce platform for SEO is not always the most expensive. It's important to know what you need, and why you're looking for a new platform in the first place. Often times, sellers are looking for ways to increase their visibility on Google search engine results pages (SERPs). But before making any decisions about which platform will be best suited to your needs, it's imperative that you understand how they work so that you can make an informed decision.  A good way to start off is by understanding whether or not your current ecommerce site has been optimized with SEO techniques already. If it hasn't, then using one of these platforms might just be the answer!

Google Shopping

Google Shopping is the best ecommerce platform for SEO if you are looking to get other websites to list your products on their pages. It's important to note that Google Shopping is an advertising platform, meaning it will automatically populate its adverts with results from Google searches based on keywords entered in said search query. You can bid to have your advertisement placed at the top of the list and get your products in front of more people. But you'll need to be careful: Google Shopping is not good for SEO if you're looking to increase your organic SERP rankings. WordStream claims that by using Google Shopping, search engine optimization will suffer because you're not directing traffic back to your website.


eBay is the best ecommerce platform for SEO if you are wanting to drive traffic back to your own website because it already has quite a bit of visibility. Because eBay offers its users an option to direct their customers through tracking pixels to send them offsite, they are indexed more extensively on Google. While this is great in terms of having a place where your website can be indexed, the downside is that the lack of customer information means it's difficult to gain a following from users. On top of this, eBay does not offer any SEO tools which will help you address issues such as duplicate content and other important onsite optimization factors.

Amazon is very similar to eBay, in that it's more indexed on Google because you are able to direct customers through their affiliate program. Amazon also offers some SEO tools that will help publishers with issues such as keyword research and duplicate content which can be time consuming to fix manually. As a bonus, Amazon does offer its users free hosting with unlimited bandwidth (eBay only offers free hosting for the first 30 days). While this is great, much like eBay, Amazon does not offer much in terms of SEO tools.


Etsy is the best ecommerce platform for SEO if you are looking to get more visibility on search engines but do not have a big budget. Unlike eBay and Amazon, Etsy does not offer its users any affiliate programs or tracking pixels. This means there is less of a chance that your page will be indexed on Google, because it is unable to track user activity. On top of this, Etsy users have been known to actually block search engine crawlers from their content which can further hinder you from getting indexed.


Shopify is great for ecommerce SEO because it offers a decent number of features and tools that make it easy for users to focus on the important factors such as page optimization and meta tags. Shopify also boasts an easy to use interface which makes updating your website quick and simple, and allows you the opportunity to edit the content directly from within your website's layout (unlike many other platforms).


WooCommerce is a feature-rich ecommerce platform and it's user-friendly. But, like Shopify and other platforms on the market, there are more features than what SEO copywriters may need to optimize their webpages. Unfortunately, some of these features can lead to an increase in duplicate content issues such as multiple pages with similar titles, headings, and descriptions.

The best platform for SEO depends on the type of business you have and your budget. For example, if you are in a low-price niche or an industry that is not well represented by Google Shopping results then Etsy may be the way to go. If your company relies heavily on customer reviews, eBay might work better because it allows customers to post ratings right below their purchase information. Amazon has been around forever so most people use it but also keep in mind they will take over 60% commission from each sale which can make them costlier than other platforms depending on how many products you sell. Shopify is great for businesses with an extensive product line who want more control over what goes into their store front while WooCommerce works best when there is a need to have multiple people working on the website.
